The Opera of Thessaloniki was founded in December 1997, through the initiative of the Organization ‘’Thessaloniki, Cultural Capital City of Europe, 1997’’ as an independent section of N.T.N.G. with the initial name Chamber Opera of Thessaloniki.
In 2002, the Ministry of Culture renamed it in Opera of Thessaloniki, securing for it its financial autonomy. Within these years, the Opera of Thessaloniki has presented many productions of important plays of the world Opera scene, co-operating with important Opera artists from abroad as well as well- known Greek singers of worldwide reputation.
The diffusion the opera a concept and the promotion of musical education widely across Greece are amongst the most important goals of the Opera of Thessaloniki.
Even more, the projection of the city of Thessaloniki as a place for significant cultural events, and the ampleness of collaborations with various city organisations and establishments for the creation of an culturally conductive environment where one can participate fairly, are for certain the basic aims of the Opera of Thessaloniki.
Since October 2008, the Artistic Director for the Opera of Thessaloniki is Giannis Giannisis.
