Thessaloniki Opera presents this year, the operetta “The Godson” by Theophrastus Sakellaridi. “The Godson” was first presented with huge success on July 18, 1918 besides the fact that was written over a period of 40 days. It is an excellent comical-love affair combination with delightful farce elements and melodic richness, which excited the audience in its own time and still fascinates us to this day. Undoubtably, it is the most popular work of Theophrastus Sakellaridi and one of the best Greek operettas.
No matter if sometimes it crosses our minds that the Greek operetta is a kind of entertainment primarily intended for the public of a bygone era and of a certain age, we should also admit that there is no greek person, regardless of age, to whom the happy operetta songs, do not sound familiar.
The operetta, this musical and theatrical spectacle, kind of a shorter version of an opera, has its roots in France and Austria, while its birth dates back around the mid-nineteenth century. The hilarious music, the comical element and the dance rhythms of the time, such as the waltz or the can-can, are the elements that characterize the operetta, which quickly became a popular item for everybody as it did not only address the elite. The operetta was part of the Greek popular entertainment, especially in critical periods of our history, as it was a joyful, optimistic and funny spectacle, which had the power to animate and entertain at the same time.

Summary "The Godson"
The play takes place in 1912 in the period of the Balkan Wars. The cute Vivika is cross with her husband, Zaharouli, because of an alleged love affair. During a feast debuts Charmidis, who claims to be Vivika's godson. Actually, he is the secretary of the real, uncouth and illiterate godson, who is fascinated by her, but now is married to an old classmate of Vivika which herself appears at the feast. At the same time arrives the heroine's uncle, a colonel, who catches Vivika in the arms of her supposedly godson. From there on the plot thickens creating a vicious cycle that everybody tries to sort out.
